Poor nutrition in childhood linked to hearing loss
A healthy diet protects against later hearing issues
A healthy diet is important for many reasons including brain and heart health, but new studies show that hearing health is another benefit.
A new study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that young adults who suffered from poor nutrition in early childhood were twice as likely to suffer hearing loss than their peers.
The researchers studied more than 2000 young adults in Nepal who had been involved in an earlier nutrition trial. They found that those where were too short or too thin for their age were twice as likely to show signs of hearing loss as young adults.
While this is a problem for those living in impoverished areas of the world, it is also an issue in America where poverty is related to the inability of families to provide enough food for all members. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture just over 12 percent of U.S. households experience this “food insecurity.”
Also, poor diet choices such as high-calorie foods with added sugars and solid fats can harm overall heath.
Setting a good example for healthy eating in your family can help prevent hearing loss due to poor nutrition. Eat a balanced diet, get plenty of exercise and rest and avoid exposure to loud or excessive noise.
Schedule regular hearing health check ups as part of an overall health plan.
