Untreated hearing loss increases risk of dementia and disability

Using hearing aids can decrease this risk, study finds

Seniors who say they have a hearing loss and do not use hearing aids are at a much higher risk of dementia and disability, according to a French study of nearly 4,000 people.

In fact, those who had a hearing loss but used hearing aids had no increased risk compared to those who reported no hearing loss.

For those with untreated hearing loss, they had a 21 percent increased chance of developing dementia. It also increased the risk of disability 28 percent from activities related to daily living such as bathing and dressing.

The findings are from a French epidemiological study with a sample of 3,777 individuals aged 65 or older who have been followed for up to 25 years.
