Dance into the New Year, even with Hearing Loss!

Happy New Year!

When you hear about New Year’s Eve, images of parties, champagne, and lots of dancing come to mind. However, when you are living with hearing loss, you may not be comfortable dancing when there is a lot of background noise, and you can’t hear the music or your dance partner well. Before you put away those dancing shoes permanently, read through our thoughts on dancing with hearing loss.

Dancing Helps You Communicate through Touch

Even if background noise is an issue, dancing lets you communicate with your partner through touch. A gentle squeeze of a shoulder lets your partner know to look at you because you may have something to say, or you want to whisper in their ear. Body language is a powerful thing, and when you dance, it can show your emotions. Also, dancing has been proven to not only lift your mood, but it can improve your health as well.

Dancing Can Improve Your Mental Health

Unfortunately, the stress of dealing with hearing loss can lead to depression. People often feel isolated when they aren’t heard or don’t hear the conversations around them. Introducing social dancing into your life has been proven to help ward off depression and make you feel less isolated. It helps get you out of the house and interacting with peers.

Dancing is also a form of exercise, which increases the blood flow, energy, and endorphins in your body. Dancing supports your mental and physical health and improves your social life.

Regular dancing can also help protect against the development of dementia, more than playing Bunco, Mahjong, or other games. The mental activity associated with dancing increases spontaneous decision-making skills, especially if the dancing is freestyle.

Remember, before taking up any new physical activity, consult your physician to make sure it is safe for you.
