Filtering Background Noise with Your Hearing Aids

Someone with normal hearing can automatically tune into what they’re trying to hear and filter out the other sounds. Unfortunately, this task is hard for someone with hearing loss.

If you get hearing aids to correct the problem, you may at first be overwhelmed by all the new sounds you can suddenly hear again — buzzing electrical devices, car horns, dogs barking, and more! The world is full of noise.

And the problem is not just you. A New York Times article documented that a third of the public places (bars, restaurants, stores, and gyms) they measured were loud enough to endanger the hearing of the people working there.

How do you manage all this noise so that you can hear what you want to hear? The answer is NOT to turn off or remove your hearing aids. Try these tips instead.

Master Your Hearing Aid Settings

Most modern hearing aids have a setting that filters out background noise. Many have multiple settings so that you can specify the situation you are in as well as what your hearing goals are. Some even have an AI feature that learns your specific needs and adjusts your settings accordingly. But no matter how many features your hearing aids offer, they are worthless if you don’t use them. And to use them effectively, you have to practice.

In past blog posts, we have explained how you can control your hearing aids with the WIDEX Moment and Magnify apps. If you have either of these, check out the related post.

Also, one of the benefits is buying from us, a local business, is that you can schedule an appointment to adjust the programming of your hearing aids or to get help with the features. And we are happy to service and program hearing aids you didn't purchase from us.

Assistive Devices Will Help You

Several assistive devices can help you filter background noise and focus on specific sounds. Check out the video below, or click here to view it on YouTube. Watch as Jennifer Waddell explains two different assistive devices and their applications.
