A recent study shows that using over-the-counter pain relievers may in fact contribute to hearing loss. 

In a study by Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital, researchers have found evidence that the duration of use of over-the-counter pain relievers is linked to a higher risk of hearing loss. This study adds to a growing body of evidence that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen) and acetaminophen contribute to hearing loss. The exact reason for this link is still unknown.

Longer duration use of these two over-the-counter pain relievers was linked with an increased rate of hearing loss, while there was no link between hearing loss and the duration of usual-dose aspirin. It is worth noting, however, that hearing loss is an established side effect of high doses of aspirin, but such doses have been uncommon for decades. While the impact is not high, any loss of hearing can bring with it other health concerns, so any risk to hearing should be taken seriously.
